Learn the Basics

Being a beginner is better than an expert in this new series dedicated to sharing recreation tips, tricks and best practices. Our knowledgeable staff are eager to provide you with the info you need to feel confident in the great outdoors.

The Parks 101: First-timer Series is designed for those who are new, or who have never been exposed to outdoor recreation. Each activity is designed to build awareness of park properties, amenities and programs, while developing individuals’ comfort, self-confidence, resourcefulness and preparedness in nature.

It's a hands-on, back-to-basics approach to education that helps to provide new opportunities for San Diegans to learn outdoor skills like how to hike, bike, rock climb, camp, fish, kayak and canoe, without the burden of having to pay for the class or purchase equipment.

There is no cost to attend, and registration will only be required for classes that necessitate the use of borrowed equipment. Translation assistance is available upon request. Details will be included in all event flyers.

There are several components to this campaign:

  • Individual workshops with specific dates and locations (see chart below)
  • A First Time Camping Program that provides no-cost campsites and camping equipment at two parks - Dos Picos County Park and Tijuana River Valley Regional Park Campground - year-round. View flyer. Group options are available and park locations are subject to change.
  • Women in the Wild is a group effort coordinated by female park rangers and staff dessigned specifically for women but all are welcome - this is program offers a variety of activies from Krav Mga to kayaking and progressive hiking series that culminates in a backpackign adventure!
