The County opened a new parking area at Mount Woodson Gateway County Preserve on March 18. Located at 16286 Highway 67 in Ramona, CA, the new facility fills a community need for safe, off-highway parking for visitors accessing the nearby Mount Woodson trail system, including Potato Chip Rock.
The Mount Woodson trail system spans land managed by the City of San Diego, the City of Poway and the unincorporated community of Ramona.
The parking area offers approximately 200 public parking spaces, 7 ADA-accessible spaces, trash and recycling receptacles, and portable restrooms. The lot will operate from sunrise to sunset and will feature a solar-powered entry gate and bollard lighting for visitor safety.
“This new parking lot is more than just a safe place to park,” said Jason Hemmen, Director, Department of Parks and Recreation. “It’s a gateway to adventure atop Mount Woodson.”
Parks and Recreation staff engaged with local trails advocacy groups, homeowner’s associations and the Ramona Community Planning Group to help guide the development of the project.
The Mount Woodson Gateway County Preserve is an 84-acre property that is currently a part of the County’s Multiple Species Conservation Program to protect native chamise chaparral, oak woodland, coastal sage scrub habitats and a variety of dependent wildlife. There are currently no formal trails within this preserve.
