Sudden cardiac arrest is a leading cause of death during youth sports. Quick access to an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) can make the difference between life and death.
According to the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Foundation, every minute without defibrillation reduces survival by 7–10%. Yet, many youth sports teams, especially those in unincorporated or underserved areas, struggle to afford them.
Under a new California law (AB 1467 and AB 310) youth sports organizations must ensure that their coaches are certified to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and operate an AED by January 1, 2027, and have an AED on-site during all official practices and games by January 1, 2028.
In response to these needs, County Parks and Recreation has launched
an AED Voucher Program and is installing outdoor, publicly accessible
SaveStation AEDs at our sports facilities. These will be available
during and after park hours to improve the ability to act on a sudden
cardiac arrest.
