New Features Coming to Waterfront

At 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 30, County officials will break ground on new sports courts, a dog park, seating and accessible paths at Waterfront Park in downtown San Diego.

The County of San Diego Department of Parks and Recreation (County Parks) is repurposing the underutilized northeast corner of the park – transitioning a 1.5-acre garden into a tree-lined active recreation zone.

Join County Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Nora Vargas and County Parks Director Brian Albright as they provide details on this important community project to improve recreation opportunities in an iconic outdoor space.

Amenities will include two pickleball courts, a basketball court, a dog park with agility equipment, a drinking fountain with pet bowl, a five-feature exercise station, table tennis, shaded seating, site lighting and accessible pathways. Approximately half an acre of enhanced garden area will remain, and new trees and plants will be added.

Construction will continue through next year, with the active recreation area opening summer 2024.

Waterfront Park is located at 1600 Pacific Highway, San Diego, CA 92101. The property spans a total of 12 acres, surrounding the iconic County Administration Building, and welcomes over 200,000 visitors a year.
