County Parks Hosts Annual “Gramping” Campout for Kinship Families

If you've wandered through Dos Picos County Park during the last weekend of May, you might spot tents popping up, laughter drifting through the oaks, and families gathered around glowing campfires. This scene marks the annual “Gramping” (think Grandparents + Camping) trip where kinship families come together for a memorable overnight adventure hosted by the County of San Diego Parks and Recreation, in partnership with the County’s Health and Human Services Agency.

Gramping is designed especially for kinship families - or grandparents, aunts, uncles, older siblings, and family friends caring for children not living with their biological parents. In San Diego County, roughly 18,000 grandparents are raising grandchildren, often facing unique challenges such as fixed incomes, physical limitations, housing instability, and the need for legal or health coverage support.

Gramping offers these families a break from daily pressures and a chance to build lasting memories together in nature.

From the moment families arrive, County staff greet them with open arms, helping them settle in and kicking off the weekend with games and crafts that spark connection. The afternoon brings a ranger-led nature walk, followed by a shared meal and lively conversation. As dusk falls, everyone gathers for s’mores around the campfire, topped off by a glowstick dance party that lights up the night.

The following morning, families join in a service project with County Parks staff to plant trees throughout the park and giving back to the community while leaving a lasting impact.

Gramping is a shining example of how County Parks and Recreation and the Health and Human Services Agency unite to uplift families and foster community. From setting up logistics to leading activities, they work together to ensure everyone feels welcome.

“This was my first year being involved with Gramping, and I am truly grateful for the experience,” said Kellie Spurgeon, Parks Recreational Supervisor. “The event was heartwarming and thoughtfully curated to create a fun, engaging experience for the kinship families who were so kind and grateful. Everyone enjoyed exploring Dos Picos Park and spending quality time together.”

This year, 68 participants joined in, and the tradition grows stronger each year—proof that with the right support, every family can thrive and every park can be a place of joy and connection.
